A brief History

The Co-operative began trading in February 1978, its objective being to provide an efficient and convenient service to the Swinburne Community as a whole. In 1992 the Co-operative opened a branch at the Mooroolbark (now Lilydale) Campus. This was done with the help and co-operation of the Student Union. In 1993 another branch of the Co-operative was established at the Prahran Campus. New stores were opened at Wantirna and Croydon in 1999.

The bookshop was set up as a Co-operative structure to be able to raise working capital via the sale of shares and also to ensure that the control of the operation remained with the members who used the Co-operative. All profits of the Co-operative remain with the organisation to ensure its continued growth and viability. No external beneficiaries exist.

second-hand book

The Bookshop sells selected second-hand textbooks on consignment. You will be able to purchase these second-hand books at 33.3% off the current retail price of a new book. The second-hand books are easy to find, with 'used' stickers on the front and rear of the book, as well as on the spine. They are generally kept on the shelf with the new copies of the title.

As a service to Swinburne students, the Bookshop sells Textbooks on your behalf as a book exchange. When you sell your used books through the shop, you will receive 48.33% of the current new retail price when the book has been sold to a customer (50% less the G.S.T. component of the Bookshop's modest sales and handling commission). Please note that only books originally purchased from the Bookshop that are currently required for a Swinburne subject and are current editions can be accepted for sale.

More information can be found here, lists of books currently accepted for second-hand sale can be accessed from the main menu on the left in the "Forms & Lists-S/H Textbooks" selection, these lists are updated regularly.

holds

We suggest that if you are intending to purchase a required text or reference, that you do so at the beginning of each semester. If you cannot afford to purchase it immediately, have it put aside. This will help to alert us to any possible shortages early in the semester so top-up orders can then be placed where necessary to ensure the book arrives in time to be of use for that semester.

Special/personal orders

If you find a book is unavailable, ask the staff when it will arrive and place a personal order at the information counter to secure a copy when supplies do become available. The bookshop cannot carry everything that has been published, but we do have a large network of suppliers worldwide. Any book currently in print can be ordered at the information counter, or through the orders menu on this web site.

All stationery, office supplies, graphic or art supplies, calculators, peripherals, and some software etc. can also be ordered. Ask for a quote before you buy elsewhere. We are here to provide a service for you and also to help you save dollars (especially on Academic software).

We welcome your suggestions to improve our services to you. Please remember that this is your bookshop, we are here for your benefit. If you have a suggestion to make please contact us at the Hawthorn Bookshop, Phone: (03) 9214 5484 or via e-mail at: bookshop@swin.edu.au
